Students at J16 Outdoor Education are learning essential bushcraft skills and techniques, alongside gaining an understanding of the laws and stewardship surrounding the woodland environment.
Working in partnership with the Peak District National Park, students and staff are exploring ways to promote a sustainable approach to the activities they undertake.
Today, the students learned about the technique of coppicing and completed the first stage in the recycling of hazel. This will be used to resource their woodcraft projects and shelter building at the Darley Barn Education Centre.
FUN FACT: Hazel can live up to 80 years in a single growth, but if coppiced, it can survive for several hundred years!
